5% carrier rate, carriers have no symptoms - Recessive genetic If 2 carriers have children together - 1 in 4 chance children will have cystic fibrosis (2 defective copies of the gene on both chromosomes) - 2 in 4 chance child will be a carrier (1 defective gene on one chromosome) - 1 in 4 chance child will be free from the disease (no cystic fibrosis mutations in genes on both chromosomes) Molecular Mechanism Defective gene (mutation in the DNA) This results in a defective protein – in particular, in cystic fibrosis this results in the protein responsible for acting as a chloride/sodium channel being defective. This results in defective ion transport in epithelial tissue. I.e. ions cannot move across the cell membranes of epithelial cells, and so there is no movement of water (via osmosis) moving across the cell membrane to wash away...
